〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Rikki Chadwick
CHARACTER AGE: 19
SERIES: H2O: Just Add Water
CHRONOLOGY: Post-series
CLASS: Hero
HOUSING: She can be wherever.

BACKGROUND: Her Just Add Water wiki page

PERSONALITY: Parallel to her normal powers of hydro-thermokinesis and pyrokinesis, Rikki is hot-headed and has a bold, in-your-face sort of personality. She calls it like she sees it and doesn't hesitate in doing so. Rebellious and independent, Rikki has been known, from time to time, to enable others to carry the same attitude. She's the type of person who might be not the leader of a riot but absolutely the person to incite it and encourage others if there's something she feels especially passionate about.

She's sarcastic and blunt, either unwilling or unable to filter herself in such a way as to cushion the blows of her verbal assaults which are, sometimes, unintentional. She's loud and obnoxious when she wants to be, which is to say most of the time. With age, she's gotten a bit better about that, but for the most part, her brain to mouth filter is on the fritz at best and completely broken at worst. This means that she struggles to make friends and will probably end up running with one of two crowds in game: like at home, the type of people who are a good balance for her and will keep her in check; nice people who mean well and can help her grow into a more compassionate person or...people exactly like her which could be good or bad, depending on the situation.

On the other hand, Rikki is fiercely loyal to her friends and family or, really, to anyone she feels is being bullied by someone with whom she does not get along. She's strong-willed and independent, sometimes to a fault. She also is very secretive, holding her cards very close to the chest, specifically when it could be dangerous not to, for example, she doesn't tell just anyone about the fact that, when in contact with water, Rikki turns into a mermaid.

She's been known to be prone to tempers and, when she feels justified, she can pose a dangerous threat to an enemy and she isn't afraid to be up front about that. She once, in canon, literally boiled the water surrounding a poacher and she had to be physically stopped by the other mermaids and talked down. She could have killed him and, in a place like MoM, she might actually hurt someone if she felt justified in doing so, ie, if she were protecting someone, defending herself, or trying to band with good guys to fight bad guys. The likelihood of the latter is a little lower only because she's not likely to be proactive about fighting the good fight. If she's recruited, she'd be an asset. If she isn't, she would be pretty indifferent to it.

Rikki is likely to spend the better part of her efforts early in her time here trying to find a way back home, not because she particularly wants to be there — she's been feeling a little abandoned by her friends who all moved on to University while she's not financially stable enough to do anything other than stay in Gold Coast — but more out of obligation. She feels financially responsible for her family. Rikki is an only child and her mother left when she was young, so it's just Rikki and her father. He makes very little money and they live in a trailer park back home. She manages a popular internet and smoothie cafe, Rikki's, which she used to co-own with her ex-boyfriend, but she don't make tons of money — partially because Zane, her ex, is financially irresponsible and she only has so much control over the books. When he's busy spending most of their profits on what she considers to be frivolous things, there's not much left to bloat their paychecks. That doesn't impact him because he's rich, but it certainly impacts her.

With that in mind, while she's here, she might resent it, but she'll work and she'll save as much money as she can with the hopes that she can take it back with her to make up for lost time. She's more likely to complain than actually do anything about the fact that she's stuck and can't go back. Growing up poor means that she's taught herself to be financially over-responsible, but she also sometimes can feel like money is burning a hole in her pocket and has, once when she received a windfall, taken her friends on a shopping spree.

Due to her mother having left when she was a child, Rikki has abandonment issues — hence her quiet resentment of her friends going to Uni — and when she attaches herself to people by making friends with them, they are stuck with her until they either walk away or give her a damn good reason to do the walking. She's more likely to have close relationships with boys and men at first, but more likely to actually foster close relationships with females and work to keep those ones close. If men/boys in friendships or relationships with her walk away, she's less likely to be negatively impacted and is less likely to fight for them to stay, whereas when she becomes close to females, she's a lot more likely to latch on. It hurts her more when female friends move on with their lives and she finds it harder to be happy for them than it is for her to be happy for her male friends, as illustrated in canon by how happy for Lewis she was when he'd gotten an internship in America, but how subtly bitter she was in her appearance in Mako Mermaids when telling the other mermaids that sometimes even mermaids have to move on.

POWER: (Mermaid power umbrella:) If she gets wet, within ten seconds, she turns into a mermaid and will remain as such until she's completely dry again. This is largely just an inconvenience, given the worst thing that will happen is that she'll end up face planting onto the ground and will have sprouted a tail. It's harder for her to maneuver herself when she has the tail and the tail is incredibly heavy, so dragging herself to move is difficult.

Fortunately, she also has Hydro-Thermokinesis, the power to spontaneously boil liquids. Rikki often uses this ability to steam dry herself to get her legs back. Other times, she'll use it to create diversions or, once, she used it to threaten the life of a tropical fish poacher who tricked her into helping him collect rare ocean fish for money by telling her that he worked for a fish breeder. She also once used her ability to thaw out a classmate who was unintentionally frozen solid by fellow mermaid, Emma's, hydro-cryokinesis. She had to use the ability very slowly and a lot of focus was required in order to keep from unintentionally boiling the girl's blood rather than simply warming it to wake her up.

As a mermaid, she can swim up to 600 km/h (or a little over 372mph) in open water.

Rikki also has Pyrokinesis, the power to start, control, and put out fires which appears to be more closely attached to her emotions and the full moon than to her cognitive mermaid powers, so this is something I'd like to explore slowly over time.

At one point, Rikki displayed the Electrokinesis, the power to summon lightning, but that only happened on a full moon and with the assistance of the other two mermaids — as a group, the three of them were able to conjure a tiny hurricane. On her own, Rikki might be able to summon and control lightning locally, in her direct vicinity, but this again would be something I would want to explore slowly over time.

Uh, also, on full moons, she can get a little crazy if she's not careful...especially if she touches water. The moon has much less of a pull on her when she's not within proximity of Mako Island, though, so in the MoM, she should be fine.

Not sure whether this would be a new umbrella or not, but mermaids in her canon (even humans turned into mermaids) actually have access to the full array of mermaid powers wherein they can control water in all states (solid, liquid, gas, gel). Currently, Rikki and her friends are each only aware of having one power apiece (she has the gas power as detailed above, which comes with other powers in a similar vein). I'd like for her to have the rest of the mermaid powers which are as follows:

SOLID: Hydro-Cryokinesis, the ability to freeze liquids, and Cryokinesis, the ability to create and manipulate ice.
LIQUID: Hydrokinesis, the ability to control and manipulate liquid, and aerokinesis, the ability to control and manipulate the wind
GEL: Gelidkinesis, the ability to turn liquids into a jelly-like substance, and Substanciakinesis, the ability to turn liquids into substantial matter, specifically a glass-like substance.
